December - snowflakes You are here: Home Photo gallery Lightning Lightning (2001) May 27, 2001

This storm chase I did together with Bernard Hulshof, Herman Harperink and Floris Bijlsma. Chase route: Amarillo - Shamrock - Canadian - Laverne OK - Englewood KS - Woodward OK - Amarillo (500 miles). Wow, this day was spectacular! The Storm Prediction Center had issued a moderate risk area for parts of Oklahoma and Kansas. We drove from Amarillo, Texas, into Kansas and encountered a severe storm with an amazing gustfront. The front was brown from the dust, bordered by greenish blue in the storm updraft (possibly from the hail). We could not stay ahead of the storm, however, and let it pass over at a gas station. The lightning photos in this gallery were taken of a small storm trailing the main complex, that formed just after sunset.
