Cumulus is sometimes accompanied by velum, which is the Latin name for 'veil'. Velum appears as a sheet of thin cloud through which the cumulus grows. Velum can be caused by cumulus growing through such a cloud layer, or by a pileus cap that becomes part of the cumulus.
