When the moon passes in exactly in front of the sun, a solar eclipse occurs. Since the moon is almost the same diameter of the sun, and is close to Earth (causing parallax) it is highly unlikely that a total solar eclipse will be visible from your location. However, a partial solar eclipse is less rare. Then the moon passes only partly in front of the sun, and the sun may look like a crescent.
