Since the Moon has no atmosphere, meteorites can strike the Moon's surface without burning up, like they usually do in Earth's atmosphere. Therefore, and also due to volcanism without weather erosion, the lunar surface is covered with small and larger craters and maria - almost featureless seas of lunar soil covering a large part of the surface.
