The lightning in this photo occured in the evening of August 22 to the east of Socorro, NM (USA). There are multiple contact points with the ground, but this was a single lightning flash.

Imaged with Nikon D100 camera and Sigma 28-80mm/2.8 zoomlens, set at 65mm f/6.7 at 200 ISO sensitivity. The exposure was a little over 8 seconds, with dark frame subtracted (noise reduction enabled).
